I remember seeing Beck with Simon Phillips back in 1980 before I had ever heard of Simon. That show totally blew me away. It was the THERE AND BACK tour. I've seen Beck three times since then, and each time I've been a little bit disappointed. The drummers (as well as the rest of the band) haven't really risen to Beck's level in my opinion.
Whom would you LOVE to see drumming with Jeff Beck?
I loved 'Si's' playing with 'Jeff beck, to me, he was the drummer that fit in best with his music. Bernard Purdie toured with him in 75' and played amazingly as well. Other drummers i could see playng in his band are probably other musical players like 'Rod Morgenstein' or 'Michael Barsimanto'.

While he was performing a drum clinic in Germany last year, he received an urgent phone call to go to England to play with Jeff Beck. He flew to London, went to Jeff's house and they played trio with the bass player, Doug Wimbish. He was accepted and was to go to Japan with them (Jan Hammer was to play with them, too). "It was a month before we were supposed to leave and I was all keyed up. I had this gig coming up with Jeff Beck! I couldn't believe it! I didn't tell anybody to not jinx it." Simon Philips couldn't do the gig because he had some things going on with Pete Townshend. About a month before the tour, the gig with Townshend folded and he called up Jeff Beck and was rehired. "I was destroyed. The floor just collapsed for me."

I've long dug Beck's blues influenced rock jams. He always surrounds himself with musicians that may very well be "better" than he is, i.e., better said, surroundg himself w great musos.
There & Back, Wired - great & classic rock w a fusion edge albums IMO. Unfortunately, I didn't see him w TBoz, but I dig the work w Si.
Purdie w him? Wow, interesting; that's diff & unigue. He's always struck me as more of an jazzier, RnB, Dan, "lighter," grooove-type drummer than b*lls-all-out rock-fusion drummer. But I'd bet he'd slay Freeway Jam or Star Cycle. But, Space Boogie DB [we ALL know he can SHUFFLE ;C)]? Or was this b4 or aft Si...
Some of Beck's stuff holds up very well today, through all the metal shredfester yrs, etc, & it makes for great live show cover jams.

I saw Bozzio with Beck, and it was amazing too, but they didn't use a bass player - it was all keyboard bass (Tony Hymas). I would have love to hear them with an actual bass player. The keyboard bass stuff was pretty muddy and got lost in the mix.

Yeah, I like Jeff Beck !!!
"There and Back" is a great one, as "Guitar Shop" with Bozzio.
Maybe my favourite is "Wired" with Narada, I'm crazy about this album !!!
We can hear a nice double drumming on the track named "Come Dancing", I think that it's Ndugu who plays with Narada, very hip !!!
I had the honor to do a session with Jeff Beck, this Guy is a pur genius, incredible to watching him plays, and to hear an incredible sound coming from his fingers on the guitar, awesome experience.

yeah i love all Jeff's stuff..
i like the way he has the utmost respect and dependence on his drummers, he knows that if his drummer doesn't fire it's all over, may as well go home..
if you watch him closely in a live situation you can see him saying "come on, come on" as if he is pleading with reality to yield to his desire to see something transcendant happen in the music.

also i love the kind of abstract approach he takes where it's all about expression over ego.
i hadn't heard any beck in ages then i heard that live at montreux version of "day in the life" ... 'nuff said.
I used to put the Beck/Hammer Live tape in my walkman and play to it all the time. Freeway Jam was also a favorite tune to jam to with my buddies in HS.
I thought Steve Alexander did a decent job with Beck. I have a VCD of that tour and it's pretty solid.
